Shopify Inappropriate currency mismatch Google Merchant Center

If you are using multiple currencies for different markets in Shopify, you may find that your Google Merchant Center account is suspended. The reasons given might be:

  • Inaccurate price status due to inconsistency between feed and landing page
  • Inconsistent currency between your product data and your website, with “Inappropriate currency” or “Currency mismatch“.

When you look at the examples, they might look something like:

Examples of violations:

Product name – feed id number – https://something.com/products/product-thing?variant=40120591089746&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic

Value on the landing page – EUR
Value in the data feed – GBP

The normal cause of this is that you are changing the currency and price dynamically depending on user IP address, either by something built into your theme, or by using the Geolocation App.

Google does not allow this. Why? It expects the data in the shopping feed to match exactly what customers will see when they click on a shopping advert. Google will check the page by visiting from an IP address in the same location as the feed – one country per feed!

Make sure that in the Geolocation app you have ticked the box “Show recommendations” so that instead of auto switching currencies, it displays a popup that prompts visitors to switch to their country and language.

Then request an account or product review depending on what level has been blocked.
